Jameer and Jason: Not an issue

During the tenure of Carlos Arroyo, and most recently Rafer Alston, there have been a few issues between the backup point guards and their role with the team. Jason Williams was impressive in Orlando's opening night thumping of the 76ers, and some wonder if there might be some battles for expected playing time, even though Jameer was an All-Star last year and had a great game himself on Wednesday. Thus, we will discuss.

The Big Train

I don't see this as an issue, at all. This team is Jameer's to run, and Williams knew that when he signed over the summer. If anything, the issue might be with Anthony Johnson who has expressed displeasure with his playing time going all the way back to The Finals when Jameer returned and forced AJ to the end of the bench. However, AJ is a professional and Williams is not the same lightning rod he was in his early playing days, so this shouldn't be an issue.

Paul Ego

Issues with Jameer seemed to fade away once he received his extension. The season prior, there was some noise about who was the better PG between himself and Carlos. Otis Smith showed that he had faith in Jameer and his ability to run this team and gave him a nice extension which some people claimed was too lofty and unearned. Jameer promptly went to work and showed that he was the man for the job. Period. J. Will is not threatening to dethrone Nelson as a team leader and starting PG by any means. Non issue.

The Nickel Steak

The thing you have to remember here is that Jason Williams just took a year off. It's great how well he looked against the Sixers, but the notion that he's going to consistently play that well, what with a TS% around 1.2 and all that, is laughable. He'll be serviceable certainly, but this plays into the much larger, stranger issue of how quickly people forgot last year how well Nelson was playing before his injury. A legit all-star has no reason to feel threatened by a backup coming off a year sabbatical.

Jareth Cutestory

I'll play devil's advocate and say that it could develop into an issue. While J-Will is coming off a year retirement and looks as fresh as ever, Jameer is coming off a season ending injury and a poor Finals performance due to coming back too soon. Surprisingly, J-Will looked like the better point guard on Wednesday. We all know Jameer has had problems in the past when backup point guards outperform him, so there is a chance that this could develop into an issue down the road if both continue to play equal minutes.

However, Jameer is the clear cut starter of this team, proven by the extension Otis gave him and his recent All Star berth. Getting him to remember that last years Finals were a fluke is the most important thing SVG can do to get him back to last years regular season level. Personally, this means giving Jameer more run then the other starters despite possible blowouts. Giving Nelson and Williams both 22 minutes a game in runaways won't get Jameer back into the swing of things, and will give him all the more reason to start to look over his shoulder.

I 3 Freely

You should all get slapped for even bringing this topic up. The guy deserves to not be questioned anymore. It is a non-issue now. Please, even if you are writing that its a non-issue, it still dregs up the past problems. Let Jameer just be the true leader of this team now!

Supply and Demand

All I can say is it about friggin time our bench was filled with Vets like J Will. Vince Carter, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass, J Will, and Matt Barnes are the new faces on this team. Every one of them have looked like giddy kids in a candy store during the pre-season for joining a team that went to finals last year. As for Jameer he is the team leader, Otis and Dwight trust him so if you don't Otis will find a new team for you very soon (just ask Rafer).

Maxwell Effort

I cannot see this being a problem unless Jameer gets hurt again (shudders) and Williams just lights it up. I think having a year off and playing for the team you have always wanted to play for gives you some level of perspective. He knows his role and respects Stan so for me it will be a non-issue.

In summary, get off his back, this is Jameer's team!
