With the start of the new season, much of the debate by the talking heads around the country is centered about whether Orlando is better or worse with Vince Carter replacing Hedo. This, of course, comes after they are done talking about the two best teams in the East, Boston and Cleveland. You might be able to make an argument either way about how the team will be on the court, but there is no doubt that the swap makes sense when looking at the bottom line. More after the jump.
First, let's look at Vince's contract:
09-10: $16 million
10-11: $17 million
11-12: $18 million*
For the 11-12 season Orlando has the option to pick up the $18 million, or decline the option making Vince a free agent. So, as of right now, Orlando is on the hook for $33 million.
On the other side, Hedo signed a 5 year, $55 million dollar contract with the Toronto Raptors.
09-10: $9 million
10-11: $9.8 million
11-12: $10.6 million
12-13: $11.4 million
13-14: $12 million*
Apparently the 5th year of his deal has a team option. The complete terms of the deal are unknown, so it is possible that Toronto is in for all 5 years, but for the sake of argument, let's just say the first 4 years are guaranteed.
Thus, the 30 year old Turk will be paid until he is at least 34 years old, the same as Vince. But if you do the numbers, Vince will only be costing Orlando $33 million while Hedo would have cost the team around $40 million. This will also last 2 more years down the road, ending the same time as Dwight and Rashard's contracts.
Does anyone want to be paying a 34 year old Turkoglu over $10 million when he showed signs of slowing down last year at only 30 years old?
In summary, Vince's contract costs more today, and will next season too, but the long term dollars make this the right choice. Remember that the next time someone complains about his contract.
