I think it is safe to say that Otis Smith has offcially grown into his general manager role. Last night while the puns were boring us in our sleep we learned that the Magic had signed Matt Barnes and that CJ Watson would indeed sign the Magic's offer sheet.
From the Orlando Sentinel:
"Aaron Goodwin, the agent who represents both Barnes and All-Star Magic center Dwight Howard, confirmed the deal early Tuesday morning in a text message to the Orlando Sentinel.
"He has agreed to a two-year deal, and I believe that Dwight's recruitment of him truly sealed the deal," Goodwin wrote."
Now the CJ Watson news from the Oakland Tribune:
"Warriors third-year point guard C.J. Watson is close to signing an offer sheet with the Orlando Magic, according to a source close to negotiations........................ Carrying four point guards is probably excessive for the Warriors, who, according to a team source, are looking to cut expenses by carrying 14 players instead of the maximum 15."
I know we have kind of hammered this point home but even with a Finals appearance Otis failed to just sit on the current roster assuming last years success would be the same this year. He is building a deeper team with more versatility across the board. This allows the Magic to match up against the bigger teams or play the exact same way that got this team to the Finals last season.
It also allows Pietrus to stay on the bench if they so choose and Vince Carter to play shooting guard which is great because I really did not want to see a JJ Redick and Jameer Nelson starting backcourt. This also gives the Magic a nice insurance policy in case of injuries to Mikael Pietrus and Jameer Nelson.
Now teams always look great on paper (see the 2008-2009 Philadelphia 76ers) but look at this projected depth chart. I am running under the assumptions that Rashard will continue to at least start at the 4 and Pietrus will continue to come off the bench.
Nelson/Watson/AJ
Carter/JJ
Barnes/Pietrus
Lewis/Bass/Anderson
Howard/Gortat
There are many different ways you could change this lineup and you have the makings of a very, very good team. I know we have not graded Otis Smith yet but if he is done for the offseason he gets an emphatic A+
