With news breaking late last night that the Magic got involved in the 4 team Shawn Marion deal, Hedo Turkoglu makes one last clutch play for the Magic netting us a nice trade exception for our troubles.
It only seems fitting we should resume our player grades with Hedo.
Player: Turkoglu, Hidayet
Stats: 16.8pts, 5.3rebs, 4.9asts with 2.6 turnovers in 36.6mpg
Best Game: This is difficult simply because Hedo had some very solid games last season. However, I think that his best game, and this is unfortunate, was Orlando's 7 point loss to Portland in early November. Hedo was fantastic that night, putting up 35 points on just 21 shots, to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Worst Game: This is also a very difficult decision, because Hedo had some offensively bad nights. The choice was tough, but I'm going with the 11/21 game against Indiana. How does this stat line suit you: 41 minutes played, 3 points on 1 of 11 shooting(0-6 from 3), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 turnovers, and Danny Granger beating him all over the court. If you're wondering about Granger's apparently poor shooting night, it's worth noting he was blocked(by Dwight) 3 times.
Most Memorable Moment: Buzzer beater against Philadelphia.
Offense: Hedo was solid throughout the year on the offensive side of the ball, and made himself into a good, albeit often ball-stopping, 4th option on offense. After Jameer went down, Hedo was better than adequate functioning as an additional distributor. However, his shot selection was often atrocious, which lead to some absolutely indefensible shooting percentages early in the season, and the ball often stopped dead in his hands, particularly late in games. Having the courage to take the final shot is something. Forcing a shot in triple coverage is something else.
Defense: Hedo is, at best, adequate on defense, and more often than not was a gigantic defensive liability. Terry and the Pump Fakes once joked that Hedo's first move on defense was to look around and decide who he would blame for the fact that he just got beat off the dribble.
Fans Perspective: Hedo is well liked in Orlando. It's a shame to see him leave. We wish him all the best against the other 28 teams.
Expectations for 2010: I expect Hedo to maintain something close to his numbers from this season for Toronto. I believe he may score slightly more, as Toronto's offense has fewer threats than Orlando's, but I believe he has at least one or two years of solid contributions left. I also think that Toronto has finally become the "No Defense All-stars" that people used to claim Phoenix was, and I can't wait to see how long it takes them to give up an 80 point half next season.
Grade: B+
