Several months ago a Magic fan posted an account of a run in with Courtney Lee at a local Orlando restaurant on the RealGM forum. The story gained quite a bit of attention, making the message board rounds as well as some blogs. We were able to ask Courtney about it, but first, the story.
A few Magic fans went out to grab some dinner at a local Orlando restaurant and shortly after they arrived Courtney Lee walked in and sat down at the next table. The Magic fan wanted to say hi but at the same time wanted to give Courtney his space. So, he just walked over and told Courtney that he was glad he is playing for Orlando, loves his game, and hopes he likes it here in town. Courtney was nice, said he loved it here, and explained that he lives right across the street and was hungry so he came right over to grab some food. The Magic fan went back to his meal excited for getting to meet the rookie.
Shortly after a woman walked up to Courtney's table and they chatted for a few minutes. She was asking if he would like to join her family for dinner! Courtney agreed and walked over and joined the family of 4 (mother, father, and two youngsters in highchairs) for the meal. He spent about an hour with the family then was on his way.
It's a short story but it struck a chord for several reasons. First, that a family would offer to invite a stranger, even though they knew who he was because he's an NBA player, to share a meal with them. Also, Courtney is a nice guy. Not only did he accept the invite, but he was very nice and gracious towards the Magic fan who approached him.
A Puns contributor caught up with Courtney and asked him about the evening. Said Courtney:
Lee: Just went to a restaurant and was meeting and greeting a lot of people and they were showing a lot of support. Then a lady came up and asked if she could take a picture and then she asked me if I would come and sit with her family. I kinda played it, played it down a little bit, but then she insisted, and I went over there and I really enjoyed myself.
TBASTBM: It made you feel good?
Lee: Yeah, it was real strong…it was nice.
That along with his stellar postseason play ends any doubt that Magic made right decision drafting this man.
