Magic backup center Marcin Gortat has been all over the news the last few days. It was reported that Gortat ripped coach Stan Van Gundy in a Polish newspaper called "sport.pl." Take it from John Denton and the Florida Today. Said Gortat:
The nature of our coach, he panics very often during games. He's got some behavior which is not good for us. With his gestures he makes us more nervous on the floor.
Not exactly how you want players describing their coach. This story had legs, especially since Gortat used panic, a word used by Shaq to describe SVG earlier this year. Newspapers were all over it, and it was even the 3rd subject discussed on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption.
Gortat and SVG cleared the air. As we previously reported, "[t]he Warlock claims that the story is 3 months old and he does not even remember it. Here is what Stan Van Gundy had to say as well. 'I'm not going to spend much time worrying about it,' Van Gundy said. 'I talked to Marcin about it. I didn't like what he said, but I try to judge everybody by the total package, of what I know of them. I've been with him for two years. He's a guy with a great attitude. He's a great guy to coach and a good team guy. ... I say inappropriate things sometimes, too. When you're somebody who's talking every day, you screw up sometimes. I don't have any problem with Marcin'."
That's good to hear. However, The Puns have learned through a source familiar with the organization that it was pretty much all a misunderstanding and that the Magic - especially the communications department - has always had trouble with Polish newspapers. Potentially because it is lost in translation, but it is often very difficult to determine if something is a direct quote or taken out of context. Given the story was originally reported several months ago, plus the translation issues and the communications departments concerns with Polish newspapers, it's easy to just let this one go and play basketball.
